This full block complex has one
of the most sensually rewarding interior courtyards in New York
City. Unlike most of the other Garden Apartment complexes in
the area where one must first pass through the building to get to the
interior courtyard, at Washington Plaza, one must pass
through the courtyard to get to the buildings. And what a
delight that is! This complex is said to have largest
succession of cascading pools within a
residential building complex in New York City. And one must walk between
their undulating shapes on one side and the most
beautifully kept planting areas on the other, to
get to one's building entrance. The five levels of
fountains are arrow-shaped and stepped so that
the point of one overlaps the base of the next, allowing the water to flow down. The buildings, too, are at an
angle to the fountains, enhancing the
naturalistic feel of the courtyard, and creating
what seems like a lush green valley
hidden within brown, craggy vertical
cliffs.
